Scope 3 Emissions: The Climate Risk Hidden in Your Supply Chain

Most executives know their company direct carbon footprint. Far fewer can tell you about their supply chain. Scope 3 emissions represent the majority of most organisations climate impact and they are now a compliance requirement.

Most executives can give you a rough picture of their company's direct carbon footprint.

Fewer can tell you what their supply chain's looks like.

That gap is becoming a serious problem.

What Scope 3 Actually Means

When we talk about carbon emissions in a business context, we split them into scopes. Scope 1 is what your organisation directly produces. Scope 2 is the emissions from the energy you buy. Scope 3 is everything else.

And "everything else" includes your entire supply chain, business travel, the use of your products, and what happens to them at end of life.

In most industries, Scope 3 represents the vast majority of total emissions. Often more than 70 percent. Sometimes closer to 90.

Under reporting frameworks including the CSRD and ISSB standards, disclosing and addressing Scope 3 is no longer optional for organisations above certain thresholds. It's becoming a compliance requirement. And it's genuinely difficult to do well.

The Executive's Role

Getting your Scope 3 data right requires engagement with suppliers who may never have been asked these questions before. It requires internal systems to collect, verify, and report data across complex value chains. And it requires executives who understand what they're being asked to oversee.

This is not a job for the sustainability team alone. It's a job for procurement, operations, and senior leadership acting in concert.

The ESG & Sustainability Compliance ExecPack covers exactly this. Including a dedicated module on greening the supply chain, engaging vendors, and managing Scope 3 emissions in a way that is audit-ready and genuinely strategic. Not just a box-ticking exercise.

Because the emissions you can't see are often the ones that carry the most risk.
